Course Description: Fundamentals of the Grid: How Power Moves is an introductory course that explains how electricity moves across generation, transmission, distribution, and customer-side systems. The session connects the physical grid to the roles of utilities, RTOs/ISOs, regulators, commodity markets, and customers, so participants understand how grid operations and energy programs fit together. Participants will also examine how electrification, distributed energy resources, demand response, congestion, resilience, and microgrids are reshaping grid planning and operations. This course is designed for technical and non-technical energy professionals who need practical grid literacy to communicate clearly, support program delivery, and understand how customer-side solutions can help the grid operate more efficiently.
Learning Objectives:
Define key grid terms and describe the basic structure of the electric power system.
Explain how electricity moves across generation, transmission, distribution, and customer side systems.
Identify the roles of utilities, grid operators, regulators, customers, and market participants in grid operations.
Explain distributed energy resources, demand response, and microgrids and how they are reshaping grid operations
Recognize how customer-side solutions such as energy efficiency, demand response and renewable energy assets can help reduce grid stress and support reliable operations.

*You’ll earn 0.2 CEUs for this course by attending the full session and passing the final quiz with a score of 70% or higher.
